The Post Office has invested heavily in the Härkingen SO letter centre. And this Monday a new classification system for packages was opened here. In the future, up to 10,000 packages per hour will be able to be sorted. It is said to be the first time the post office has integrated a pure parcel sorting system into a letter centre. Employees sort letters and packages of all sizes in the same place.

Post office boss Roberto Cirillo, 51, said it was “an important milestone for the post office”. 160 new employees were hired. Up to 30 million packages can be sorted each year. This shows the importance of online business in Switzerland now.

Amazon surpasses Zalando

The Swiss rely primarily on online retail, especially when it comes to travel, event tickets, music, movies and books. This is also confirmed by the e-commerce sentiment barometer 2023. So where do Swiss people prefer to shop online?

Digitec Galaxus, Amazon and Zalando are among the most popular online marketplaces. In particular, Amazon (25 percent) has become more important than the previous year (20 percent). And this year Zalando surpassed that.

The ten most popular platforms in the country:

one. Digitec Galaxus 32 percent
2. Amazon 25 percent
3. Zalando 20 percent
4. ricardo.ch 15 percent
5. micro dot 12 percent
6. Ali Ekspres 10 per cent
7. tutti.ch 6 percent

“We see that marketplaces where several retailers sell their products at the same time are becoming increasingly important when searching for products,” says Philippe Mettler, digital commerce expert at Swiss Post.

Search engines still dominate

73 percent of survey respondents still start their product search through search engines, but their value is declining. “At the same time, customers want to be able to order products directly from the manufacturer,” says Mettler.
