53 employees lost their jobs at Google’s campus in Zurich’s Europaallee.

According to a media report, all 43 recruitment-related jobs at Google Switzerland will be eliminated. In addition, according to the “Inside Paradeplatz” portal wrote over the weekend, there will be 10 positions in the “Android TV teams”. In the first round of layoffs, it was already publicly announced at the beginning of the year that 250 people would be laid off.

As Google has slowed the pace of hiring, the volume of questions for recruiters has correspondingly decreased, Google told news agency AWP in response to a query. “We have made the difficult decision to reduce the size of our recruitment team to ensure we can continue to organize our activities efficiently,” a spokesman said, without giving exact figures.

End of a growth phase

Affected employees will be provided with transition phase, layoff services and severance support. He would also have the opportunity to look for a new job externally at Google.

The latest deletions indicate a temporary end to Google’s growth phase in the city of Limmat. According to the company’s own information, nearly 5,000 people currently work here. By comparison, there were only 2,000 employees at the beginning of 2017. Since then, Google has opened several new offices in Zurich. The recruitment department, which is responsible for finding new employees, has also grown in parallel.

12,000 jobs worldwide

But at the beginning of the year, Google announced 12,000 layoffs worldwide; this amounts to approximately 6 percent of the workforce at the time. Google is not alone in the tech industry when it comes to layoffs.

Almost all tech giants such as Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon have announced layoffs on a similar scale. The reasons cited are primarily the weakening economy and a greater focus on productivity. (pbe/SDA)
