The doctor is right next to you, the temperatures are suitable and it is affordable for retirees. Where is the best place to live in old age? The American portal “US News & World Report”, together with the University of Pennsylvania, compiled the ranking of the best countries for the eighth time. And he chose Switzerland as the best country for retirement.

17,000 people from all over the world were surveyed for the ranking. The criteria were affordability, favorable taxes, friendliness, climate, respectable property rights or a good healthcare system.

Why is Switzerland ranked first?

This is not the first time Switzerland has reached the top of the podium. “Switzerland is not always known as the most affordable country,” Devon Haynie (43), deputy editor-in-chief of US News & World Report, told “Business Insider.” But people are big fans of Switzerland. A country that is stable, safe and less corrupt.

A clear contrast to expensive Switzerland is Portugal, which has been named the second best country for aging. The cost of living in Portugal is significantly cheaper and the weather is warmer in the south. Australia also has enough sun and ranks third among the best countries for seniors.

Neighboring island New Zealand ranks fourth among the best countries to retire in, thanks to its subsidized basic public services. Five other European countries are represented in the top ten: Spain, Italy, Greece, Sweden and Denmark.
