Christoph Aebischer, Freiburg Economic Development’s communications officer, said about Keystone-SDA that only administrative positions were affected by the shutdown as there was no production at the Freiburg plant. Thus, he confirmed a report in the newspaper “La Liberté” on Saturday.
The shutdown is planned for the first half of 2024. The Freiburg Economic Development Agency was informed about this at the beginning of June. Aebischer said the company had been offered ways to keep all or part of operations in the canton, but Covestro did not respond.
Covestro specializes in the production of polymer materials. The company is headquartered in Leverkusen and employs around 18,000 people at more than 50 production sites worldwide. Last year, sales increased to about 18 billion euros, while the group posted a net loss of 272 million euros. Last year, the group still recorded profits.
