CO2 emissions from Swiss road traffic decreased last year

Compared to 2019, emissions from fuels have dropped more than 8 percent, as Bafu wrote on Tuesday. Compared to the 1990 starting year, fuel emissions are 5.5 percent lower overall.

According to the federal government, the reasons for the decline are the change in mobility behavior – more home offices and fewer business trips – and the increased proportion of electromobility in road traffic. The share of biogenic fuels in total fuel consumption increased slightly in 2022 to 3.4 percent.

Emissions from fuels, primarily oil and gas, adjusted for weather conditions, continued to decline by 4.9 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year. The main reasons, according to Bafu, are better energy efficiency of buildings and increased use of renewable energies for heating.
