IR-Dosto has e-bike sockets and carpet in class 2: good marks for the new Stadler train

Stadler Rail’s new IR Dosto was unveiled at the Zurich main station on Friday morning.
Rolf Kromer

The new IR Dosto is late. When SBB wanted to promote the new train to the media from the Stadler Rail workshops with its boss, Peter Spuhler (64), he wasn’t there. A few minutes later, however, he steps onto platform 10 at Zurich’s main train station. The reason for the delay is not the brand new train, but a disruption in the Winterthur area.

The name IR-Dosto stands for Interregio double-decker train. Two years ago, SBB ordered 60 units from Stadler for CHF 1.3 billion. The new train is 150 meters long and offers 466 seats. The new Interregio train compound is state-of-the-art: bike racks for e-bikes, including sockets so you can charge the bike battery. Carpets are also second class. Sockets in every seat. More toilets and more legroom in the compartments.

Additional comfort on the new train means a reduction of 60 seats compared to the previous Regio-Dosto. Christian Frisch, Head of Rolling Stock Development at SBB: “We sacrificed a few seats. This resulted in a good mix of comfort and capacity.” Multifunctional spaces are also created at the expense of the seat. Eight bike spaces are available. While the Regio-Dosto has two toilets, the new IR-Dosto has five. The low-floor IR-Dosto provides barrier-free boarding for all passengers.

2. Class

You feel good on the trend. This is especially true for the second grade. LED light, high-quality seats and carpets add to the feeling of spaciousness. There is a pleasant silence in the car. Large desks allow you to work with your laptop. New parking spaces for strollers are an added strength. Just like enhanced screens that let you see where you are at all times.

1st Class

Premium offers even more space. There are only three seats in a row instead of four.

The approval of the Federal Department of Transportation is still awaited. However, SBB assumes that from 17 July they will be able to use the first new IR Dosto on the Zurich-Schaffhausen route. Other Interregios will then gradually be used on other routes in German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland. From the timetable change in 2023, they will operate on the routes Bern-Zurich-Chur (IR35) and Basel-Zurich Airport (IR36). Then I hope it’s on time from the start.
