Expensive shock in the Mediterranean: beach holidays in Italy will cost much more this summer

Flights to Italy became on average 40 percent more expensive.

Many Swiss cross the southern border into Italy in the summer. Close, warm, Mediterranean beckons and not that expensive. At least until now. If you thought you could save some money by taking a simple beach vacation in Italy this summer, you’ve miscalculated.

Holidays there have never been so expensive. Compared to the previous year, tariffs for domestic flights increased by an average of 40 percent, the “Aargauer Zeitung” wrote. And that’s despite fuel prices falling 22 percent.

The price hikes even got international price watcher Benedetto Mineo into action. It is asking seven airlines, including Ryanair, Easyjet and Ita Airways, to explain the higher tariffs. The most expensive are flights to Sicily or Sardinia.

But staying overnight also gets more expensive. Also in regions like Tuscany or Liguria that are easily accessible by car. Hotels and hostels have become 33 percent more expensive, according to surveys by various consumer associations. You have to pay almost 20 percent more for resorts and campgrounds. And even pizza is more expensive: prices in pizzerias and restaurants have increased by 15 percent.

Shadow is a privilege

According to consumer organization Codacons, a family pays a total of 800 francs more for a week’s vacation in Italy than the previous year, the article continues. A visit to the Lido alone costs 100 francs fast, including food and parking. Because you pay 30 francs a day for a sunbed and an umbrella. A portion of the shade at trendy Gallipoli in Apulia costs 80 francs! Lying on a towel in the sun is much cheaper.

Beach visitors also have to follow strict rules in Italian tourist destinations – the rush is too big. That’s why there are visitor restrictions, reservation requirements and even a ban on beach towels on the beaches.

But so far, high prices haven’t stopped anyone from traveling to Italy. Five million more overnight stays are expected in July alone! Hotel association Federalberghi expects a total of 75 million overnight stays for the summer. (kae)
