Avec struggles with security issues: 24-hour shops close again at night

The two 24-hour stores at ETH Hönggerberg and at Schaffhauserplatz in Zurich are currently closed overnight.

Avec’s 24-hour stores promise a “24/7 shopping – around the clock” sign. If the staff is not there, the operation operates autonomously. At the moment, however, this is only partially true: the two 24-hour shops at ETH Hönggerberg and at Schaffhauserplatz in Zurich are only open during the day. That’s what operator Valora told Blick, confirming an article written by CH-Media.

Two branches were temporarily closed at night due to “various security related incidents”. But Valora doesn’t want to say more. It can only be assumed that it was theft and vandalism.

I am convinced of the concept

“The 24/7 operations at Schaffhauserplatz will resume at the end of June. The decision has not yet been made at ETH Hönggerberg,” he said. On the other hand, one thing is clear: Valora believes in and will continue to invest in the 24-hour store concept. «For example, our 24/7 avec store at Hardplatz is one of our most successful outlets to date. .»

In total, Valora operates six such stores and eight Avec boxes that operate fully autonomously. The Avec box in Urdorf ZH is also currently closed. All other branches are normally open 24 hours.

poultry vending machines

Migros also operates three autonomous stores: Teo branches. But everything works normally – no shutdowns are planned at night.

In Coop, there is no such branch, instead there are vending machines. You can also shop here outside of store opening hours. There are currently test vending machines at five train stations and two supermarkets in Bern’s Coop sales district. The concept was well received. “Crucial safety challenges are not currently an issue with our machines,” says a spokesperson. (kae)
