Opposition seeks other ways: French once again protest Macron’s pension reform

But Laurent Berger, head of the CFDT union, announced at the start of the demonstrations at the Europe 1 transmitter Tuesday that this would be “one of the last days of action” against President Emmanuel Macron’s plan. Resistance will likely continue in a different way. “It’s game over,” Berger said. Authorities expected as many as 600,000 people to strike and demonstrate in various cities.

The reform to gradually increase the retirement age from 62 to 64 has now been passed, after a long back and forth. It should kick in in September. On Thursday, the opposition is looking to reverse the rally — with little chance of success. Macron and his middle government want to prevent an impending deficit in the pension fund with the reform. The deposit time for a full pension will increase faster.

The retirement age in France is currently 62. In fact, retirement starts later: those who don’t pay long enough to receive a full pension work longer. At 67, there is a non-deductible pension, no matter how long it is paid. There had been months of strikes and protests, including violent ones. On Tuesday, the head of the CGT union, Sophie Binet, warned: “If he (Macron) decides to stick with this reform, nothing will be the same.” (SDA)
