The Swiss airline is preparing for multiple delays due to Tuesday’s strikes. Air traffic controllers and ground personnel are on strike in France. However, this doesn’t just affect flights to and from France, as Switzerland announced on Monday.
Overflights to other destinations, such as Spain, Portugal or the USA, that crossed French airspace, were also affected, the statement said. “Long delays are expected,” the airline said.
In some cases, deviations from the south or north of France may also be necessary. This causes more delay. Overall, Swiss anticipates “significant” impacts and numerous delays, as well as individual cancellations of flights.
So far, a return flight between Geneva and Nice has been cancelled. Alternatives are now being sought for the 120 affected passengers.
“Our staff have been working hard for several days to keep our flight schedule as stable as possible,” Swiss President of Operations Oliver Buchhofer said in a statement. Avoiding cancellations has the highest priority. They also want to make the flights as on time as possible. But, “unfortunately, it won’t always be possible,” says Buchhofer.
Last weekend, strikes in Italy led to 23 flight cancellations. According to the announcement, around 2,000 Swiss passengers were affected. Buchhofer says that never before in airline history have so many flights had to be canceled as in the last twelve months due to various strikes. According to the announcement, the 2023 financial impact of the strikes will already have reached mid-double-digit millions. (SDA/uro)
