Interactive map tells you the quality of Zurich’s drinking water

The cantonal laboratory carries out regular checks of the drinking water. The results of the tests are now accessible online on the “Züri Drinking Water Map”.

The drinking water in the canton of Zurich is of good quality and can be drunk safely, the health service reported on Monday.

According to the announcement, the interactive map, which can be found on the website of the cantonal laboratory, will show the results of surveys by official food controls and self-monitoring by water suppliers.

Results of measurements of various trace substances and parameters are published. In a first step, the two most common residues of the plant protection product chlorothalonil, the use of which is no longer permitted, are visualizedas announced by the Canton of Zurich.

The degradation products can still be detected in ground and spring water and also in drinking water because it takes years before they are broken down. The health department writes that the amount of residue found shows that drinking water is safe throughout the canton.

Chlorothalonil is a pesticide used in agriculture to control unwanted fungal growth. The Swiss agrochemical concern Syngenta, which belongs to the Chinese state-owned company “ChemChina”, produces chlorothalonil-containing fungicides and is fighting a legal battle against the federal government, which banned the substances in 2020 and warned that certain substances may be carcinogenic. Syngenta denies this.
