And? How’s the January detox going? New year, new me – there would be a purge, right? Cleanse the body. Flush out the toxins. And by the way, you gained weight during the holidays, didn’t you? No problem! New Year’s Diet – Go!

Mmm… wrong. Humanity has never had such a high life expectancy as now. Our Stone Age ancestors, on the other hand, could appreciate Methusales when they were 30 years old – only this in the event that they survived cold, plague, infection, religious human sacrifice, tribal feuds, saber-toothed tiger attacks, or famine. Most died when they were babies.

Unfortunately, most diets are bullshit. Often even: They are harmful. And they are the most harmful to our psyche.

Being “thick” and “thick”. all relative terms that have been historically and culturally redefined and continue to be redefined. Your “big hips” of today passed for “feminine curves” in the 1950s. The butts of today’s sex symbols were considered obese in the 1990s. In addition, obesity can have a wide variety of causes, of which the socio-economic are often the most important.

But the diet industry wants you to blame yourself. What? Did you gain weight during the holidays? But you let go! YOU LOSER! Do something! Buy this diet plan! Buy that low-fat product, that diet pill, watch a lot of reality TV, read a lot of glossy magazines and follow a lot of Instagrammers, those perfect people with perfect bodies who are so perfectly in control of their perfect lives! #goals #believe in yourself. assholes, all of them.

Note: The lady above doesn’t look like this because she eats the stuff, but because she’s a fitness model by trade whose job is to follow a rigorous workout regimen every day. Such people should be completely irrelevant to us mere mortals.

And then here comes the detox industry and it will accomplish the same goal. #cleaneating #detox #cleanse #supplement #bollocks. Pseudo-scientific nonsense, folks.

Anyone who thinks they need to detoxify their liver probably didn’t pay attention in biology class. And if you think you can pop pills, go on a juice cleanse, apply foot patches, or do a colonic irrigation and magically banish all evil (pronounced “toxins”) from your body, be warned: it sucks.

Sorry to tell you this way, but your body cannot be “detoxed”. Yes, the human body absorbs toxins from food. And yes, there are also toxic intermediate and end products in the metabolism. Such substances are – in some cases after conversion in the liver – excreted via bile, urine, etc. or are not even absorbed in the intestine. As long as the involved organs are healthy, they do not need support. But if you have liver or kidney damage, your vegan vegetable smoothie is no longer any good – you need medical treatment.

There is simply no scientific evidence that detoxing has any effect on a reasonably healthy person.

Except you might feel good about it. What to answer: And hopefully, damn it! At crazy pricesspent on the powders and diet plan subscriptions, a vague sense of well-being is the least one can ask for.

Take a look at this thing:

“Kale, apple, lemon – three simple ingredients that make your body sing!” Okay, the phrase “let your body sing” is pretty much a bullshit indicator. But look at the ingredients: 42 g of sugar is in a bottle with 4.7 decimals. No wonder that after drinking the broth you are full of energy! And, oh yes: make 8 francs, please!

That’s why the detox industry exists: it’s big money. Just look at the prices in the superfood rack at the Coop. Or on Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop portal. Or with those self-proclaimed food coaches who offer their services. Above all, one thing is purified: your wallet.

“But I went on a detox diet and lost weight.” Yes, of course – because this one, like most, was a low-calorie diet. And now we come to the sad truth: If you want to lose weight, you need to take in fewer calories than you burn, so you need to eat less and exercise more. Sorry

And no, there are no “good” or “bad” calories.

So, and if you really just wanted to “detox”, then just live and eat a little healthier? Well guess what? Here too, the following applies: move a lot and eat a balanced diet. Yes, eat enough vegetables, fruit, legumes and the like – so you can easily tuck away a steak, donut or whiskey now and then.
