For Depression Advertising: Depression League Criticizes Cathy Hummels

Cathy Hummels makes no secret of her illness: she suffered from depression, about which the ex-wife of ex-national player Mats Hummels speaks openly. That’s good, according to the German Depression League: “Awareness of this disease and of mental health in general is important,” says a recent press release. But in recent days, Hummels has overshot his goal, at least denounced the organization.

The Munich native uses her social media channels to advertise events organized by her company “Events by CH”. The “retreats” she advertises are spiritual breaks for people with depression. That sounds reasonable, but: The Depression League finds it “difficult” when the impression is given that depression is “just a momentary phenomenon” that “can be magically swept away with sunbeams”.

“It becomes very difficult when it is apparently used as an advertising medium to market (own) products,” the statement said about the disease. The Depression League’s appeal, then, is, “Don’t present this life-threatening illness as something easy or a passing fad!” Cathy Hummels is not mentioned in the statement – yet it is clear that she must be intended.

This ties in with a recent message from the Depression League on Instagram, in which Hummels is addressed directly. “Dear Mrs. Hummels, in connection with the serious illness depression, banal reference to sunlight and thus advertising for your company, we not only think it is doubtful, no, we are shocked”, it says there.

In the post, the Depression League also justifies Hummels’ statements – the influencer was apparently often mistaken for an ambassador of the organization. However, she works with the German Depression Aid Foundation, which, unlike the Depression League, is not an organization for those affected, but is engaged in research related to the disease.
