Not so long ago we talked about the fashion industry gradually “moving” from fleeting trends to all kinds of “core”: balletcore, gothiccore, kidcore and the list goes on. It’s not just fashion pieces like cropped blue shirts that went viral in 2022. No, the “cores” are entire fashion highways that completely cover fashionistas of all levels and “categories” from top models and actresses to mere fashionistas.

Jenna Ortega thus became the unspoken ambassador of gothiccore, Julianne Moore – normcore, Elsa Hosk often plays ballet. But the trend of “mermaids” – Mermaidcore – has even more fans!

It all started with the Versace 2021 spring-summer show, when Donatella Versace released one of the juiciest sea-inspired collections of recent years. And not realistic, but fanciful, as if sketches for a new “mermaid” got on the dress. The success was just as fabulous – and now, in 2023, fashion is practicing Mermaidcore with power and the main, that is, with the “mermaid” aesthetic.

True, in a few seasons she transformed from the deliberately bright version of Versace to boho style and even adopted a few chips from the romantic hood with maxi dresses, tights, ballet flats and strappy sandals.

It’s actually a “recipe” to put together a fashionable mermaid look. You can do with something symbolic: T-shirts with Ariel and elaborate outfits are as popular on social networks as street styles from Fashion Week. But we decided to take it seriously, so we put together a Mermaidcore “starter pack” for you.

We declare: we are entangled in mermaid nets and will wear the same nets all season long. Mesh dresses, crochet t-shirts and body chains are also used.

To make them glitter and sparkle like scales, we require more new things in sequins. A shiny dress can be worn with a sweatshirt, shirt, t-shirt, jacket – there are many options, which will easily justify the investment 🙂

And mussels – yes more! You can use this print as a pattern, or you can find clothing with a seashell accent. Ruched tops that are shaped like corals and seashells will work too!

No need to think about which day to walk on crystals and which pearls. Combine jewelry with white mother-of-pearl and rhinestones: together they will resemble seashells covered in seawater and shining in the sun.

Another obvious trick is nautical prints. We like both the landscape and the watercolor “stretches” – like a sunny journey on the waves!

Ruffles and sheer flowy dresses with blouses are staples if you’re seriously in love with Mermaidcore. With ballet shoes, such combos will look incredibly cute and spectacular, and when you tire of the mermaid aesthetic, replace the shoes with neutral boots or sneakers. And then – who knows – fashion is cyclical!
