After “Killers Of The Flower Moon”: Martin Scorsese returns after 35 (!) years to one of the most controversial subjects of his career

At the Cannes Film Festival, Martin Scorsese’s latest work “Killers Of The Flower Moon” was without a doubt one of the absolute highlights. The audience was so excited after the film’s premiere that they gave a nine-minute standing ovation, a behind-the-scenes celebration from both the cast and crew. Of course, our colleague Christoph Petersen also saw the film and praised an epic monumental work in the 4.5 star review:

The MOVIE STARTS review of “Killers Of The Flower Moon”

But the 80-year-old director is not done with the cinema yet. Although “Killers Of The Flower Moon” has only just been shown at Cannes and is still some time away from a mainstream release, Scorsese already seems to be thinking about his next project. And that should be pretty epic too – the subject certainly makes for epic.

Will Scorsese’s next project be a movie about Jesus?

After the Cannes premiere, Scorsese traveled to the Vatican to meet Pope Francis, along with other artists and also in a private audience, as he revealed at a press conference in Rome.

The conversation with the head of the Roman Catholic Church was not only about religious issues, but also about the work of the director. So he explained afterwards that he was writing a screenplay about Jesus. “I’m about to start production,” said Scorsese, also hinting that this could be his next film. However, what exactly it is about is not yet known.

Scorsese is familiar with movies about Christianity. In 1988, he published The Last Temptation of Christ, an adaptation of the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis, starring Willem Dafoe, Harvey Keitel, and Barbara Hershey. The drama caused a lot of controversy because Jesus was portrayed as an emotional, doubting human being who makes mistakes and falls in love. For large parts of the church, the film was pure blasphemy – a masterpiece for critics (as you can also read in our 5-star review).

The controversies don’t seem to have changed Scorsese’s relationship with God and the church. Otherwise he would hardly think of another ‘Jesus’ movie.
