Many Swiss are now starting to plan their holidays. Going abroad again – tourism has survived the corona pandemic. But it also means that the most popular resorts are threatened by overcrowding. The Italian government is now putting an end to this: cars with foreign license plates will no longer be able to come to the island of Lampedusa in the summer. And: If you want to go to the island of Giglio, you will have to pay an entrance fee of three euros in the future. But there are also measures against excessive tourism in other countries.

For ecological, social or technical reasons – mass tourism also bothers tourists themselves, says Christian Laesser, Professor of Tourism and Service Management at the University of St. . However, there are differences in practice. Reservations are customer-friendly measures. It’s frustrating for visitors when doors close at some point in popular tourist destinations. “Everything free is overused at some point,” Laesser says.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

The Croatian city is experiencing intense stress due to the large number of tourists. Ever since “Game of Thrones” was filmed in the historic city centre, the city has been flooded with fans who want to experience “King’s Landing” in real life. Solution: A limit on cruise ships allowed to berth. Additionally, since 2019 there is an app that shows if Dubrovnik old town is currently overcrowded and offers visitors alternative routes.

2

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam introduced a tourist hat in 2019. Only 20 million overnight stays are allowed per year in the Dutch capital. Amsterdam is also struggling with a serious housing shortage because so many accommodations are rented out as Airbnbs. For this reason, you need to get permission to rent an apartment as a holiday destination. A bed tax of three euros also has to be paid – nowhere else in Europe is this high.

3

Corsica, France

The southern French island in the Mediterranean is a popular holiday destination for its mountainous landscape and turquoise beaches. Due to the large number of tourists, the island had to impose a visitor limit. A woman writes on Google, “The island itself is really beautiful, but not yet overcrowded,” and awards one of five possible stars. Only 2000 visitors a day are allowed on the Lavezzi Islands.

4

Balearic Islands, Spain

The islands of Mallorca, Ibiza, and Menorca struggle with overcrowded beaches. In 2022, 16.5 million tourists traveled to the Balearic Islands. For this reason, a limit has been imposed on the number of beds. Balearic Islands tourism minister Iago Negueruela said it was also planned to impose a limit on cruise ships to ensure “the offer is used in a more sustainable way with fewer tourists”.

5

Flims, Switzerland

The term “mass tourism” is also known in Flims. The hashtag Caumasee has 64,200 posts on Instagram. Especially in summer, the turquoise blue lake attracts visitors to Graubünden. Since 2021 the entrance to the pool on the beautiful lake cost CHF 19 per person. But if you stay in the area for one night and buy a guest card, you only pay 8 francs. The flow of tourism was thus restricted.

6

Granada, Spain

The Alhambra fortress on Granada’s Sabikah hill received so many visitors that they had to wait for hours. It is no longer possible to buy tickets from the site. Tourists who want to experience the castle must make a reservation. However, the tour should be planned well in advance because places are fully booked months in advance.

7

Mykonos and Santorini, Greece

Ferries come to the Cyclades every day during the summer months, and millions of tourists come to the Greek islands for vacation. Especially popular: Mykonos and Santorini. The Ministry plans to take measures against mass tourism. By reducing the time interval allowed for ferries to arrive, fewer tourists may also arrive. And: There must be other ports where tourists dock. The offers have not yet entered into force.
