Wine spoils very quickly

We tell you which dangers you should pay special attention to.

oxidation

When wine comes into contact with too much oxygen, it oxidizes. This process happens automatically when you open a bottle. Using vacuum closure systems and storing the opened bottle in the refrigerator can slow but not stop the oxidation process. Even sealed wines that have been stored for too long will oxidize sooner or later.

light exposure

Wine is sensitive to ultraviolet light. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or other strong light sources may affect taste. The danger is greatest in clear white glass. Use the sunny spot by the window for a plant instead of grapes.

heat

Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can cause wine to age prematurely and deteriorate its flavor. Even at temperatures above 24 degrees, wine oxidizes much faster, resulting in a different taste and lower quality. The risk of overheating in the car is particularly high.

cold

Frozen wine expands inside the bottle and can damage the cap, causing uncontrolled ingress of air. Wine ages faster and can become undrinkable within a few days. This danger arises especially in winter when you want to cool it outside rather than in the refrigerator.

dryness

Natural cork sealed wines require minimal moisture to keep the cork elastic and tight. If the humidity is too low, the cork will dry out and shrink. This allows air to enter the bottle, causing oxidation and reduced wine quality. For this reason, you should definitely store the wines sealed with natural cork flat.

moisture

Some wine bottles contain metal parts such as caps or caps. Excess moisture can corrode these metal parts, negatively affecting the wine and releasing potentially harmful substances. A very humid wine cellar also favors the growth of mold and odor, especially in wooden crates. If the wines are stored in moldy air for years, this mold can also transfer to the wine over time.

temperature fluctuations

Frequent and extreme temperature fluctuations can cause the wine to age faster and decrease its quality. Therefore, when storing wine, you must ensure that the wine is stored at relatively constant temperatures. However, slight temperature fluctuations caused by different seasons are not a problem.
