More and more likely that the 1.5 degree mark will soon be crossed

The head of the World Weather Organization (WMO) warned Wednesday of rising temperatures as a result of climate change. (archive image)

Last year, the WMO kept the probability of this prediction coming true at just under 50 percent. It now assumes 66 percent.

At the UN climate conference held in Paris in 2015, the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to the end of the 19th century was accepted in order to limit global climate damage. The WMO does not assume that global warming will rise above this limit permanently in the next few years. “However, the WMO is alarming because we will exceed 1.5 degrees more and more often,” said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.

The United Nations expects the annual average temperature to reach record levels at least once by 2027. “We must prepare,” Taalas warned.
