Sarah Hutter, 30, florist and manager of the Badenbloom store, says the first summer flowers will go on sale in May! at Baden AG. To surprise mom on Mother’s Day, she recommends a heart-shaped flower arrangement, airy natural bouquets with peonies, lechogen or snapdragon. “They bring home the carefree air of the warmer months approaching.” She adds that pastels and pinks are good choices for Mother’s Day. “They look good in any setting.”
Hutter says the birthday flowers can be customized to the person receiving them. “Long-lasting dried flowers are in vogue right now.” A bouquet of seasonal flowers is always a hit. Likewise, hydrangeas in pots that bloom again the next season.
Wedding venues are often lavishly decorated with cut flowers – there’s little point in giving additional gifts, according to Hutter. “The plants that accompany the newlywed couple throughout their lives are a better gift,” says the florist. For example, orchids or – if the couple has a garden – a fruit tree that will grow with the marriage.
“Rose bouquets of romantic roses are still the ideal gift on the day of love,” says Hutter. If you have a bouquet with fewer than ten flowers, you should give an odd number of roses, as they can be arranged more visually. According to the florist, pink roses have become increasingly popular on Valentine’s Day in recent years, alongside the classic red roses, which symbolize love and passion. They represent youth, passion and beauty.
As a keepsake for an invitation – for a dinner, for example – Hutter recommends a flower box. Most consist of a high-quality cardboard box in which the flowers are arranged in a floral carpet. You’re not doing anything wrong, especially with landlords whose apartment you don’t know yet, Hutter says. “A flower box doesn’t need a vase and would look beautiful on a sideboard as well as on a coffee table.”
Hutter says the best thing to do when someone has surgery is to give flowers that are easy to hold. “A flower arrangement or flower box weighs very little and requires very little maintenance.” Glückstaler, a houseplant, is also suitable as a get-well gesture thanks to its name. “If the person is in the hospital, colorful flowers can cheer up,” says Hutter. “But please the non-smelling varieties!”
How close you are to the deceased is crucial to the type of flower you bring to or send to a funeral, Hutter says. “A heart-shaped flower arrangement is reserved nearby.” If you belong to the circle of friends of the grieving family, then a wreath of flowers or an earthen bowl planted with flowers is suitable. “For a long time, the white carnation was the only acceptable mourning flower,” says Hutter. “By the way, colorful flowers are also common as grave decorations.”
