The concept is as simple as it is genius: a handful of stars, most of whom have comedic backgrounds, have to make each other laugh for six hours. The core of the whole: no one should laugh. But if you let yourself be entertained, you will be kicked out. That’s exactly what “LOL: Last One Laughing” is on Amazon Prime Video. This year saw the start of the show’s fourth season, moderated as usual by Michael “Bully” Herbig.
And besides Bully, there were other familiar faces in Martina Hill, Kurt Krömer, Hazel Brugger and Max Giermann, who were already present in previous seasons of “LOL”. Anke Engelke and Bastian Pastewka were also involved again – albeit this time not in competition with their colleagues, but as the hit duo “Jenny & Mel”. As surprise guests, they were tasked with making the others laugh. A memorable performance:
in the podcast”Quality time“, published weekly by Riccardo Simonetti and Anke Engelke, one of the great mysteries surrounding “LOL” has now been cleared up. One of the listeners posed the following question: “What’s it like when you turn ‘LOL’ and have to go to the toilet? Engelke then only explained that she had relaxed in Season 4, as she only appeared as a prankster and was housed in a separate building on the filming grounds the entire time.
When are the stars allowed to go to the toilet in “LOL”?
Engelke then pointed out that there were still real toilet breaks in the first season of “LOL”, explaining: “There was no experience at all, so the tension was even greater. You didn’t know if you’d get out of there in one piece or if you’d crawl out on all fours. It was impossible to predict whether this would ever come to an end, whether we would be completely exhausted afterwards.”
Of course, as “LOL” went on and on, the contestants could tune into what was happening on the show. As Anke Engelke explains, the participants briefly disappeared during filming: “The many smokers! They hissed much more often than those with the weak blisters.” According to Engelke, this was possible through a small door in the stage area.
That means the stars can always take little breaks when they need to go to the bathroom, feel like a cigarette or just want to catch their breath. As Anke Engelke revealed, she had only been to the toilet once in the first season. Not at all in seasons 2 and 3. Buzzer time can be used for such smaller breaks. When Bully interrupts the show to confront one of the candidates with her laugh, everyone is allowed to relax. Here everyone can have a short smoke or go to the toilet before continuing.
