On the first Monday of May each year, the “Who’s Who” of the international fashion scene wears flashy clothes and walks the red carpet in front of the Art Museum in New York. The reason: The museum’s costume institute is supposed to celebrate the exhibition that changes every year.

Slogan 2023

New York’s Metropolitan Museum will posthumously commemorate fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who passed away in 2019, next year. As the famous Central Park Museum in Manhattan has announced, some 150 works by the Hamburg-born designer will be on display in the spring in the “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” exhibition.

“Karl Lagerfeld was one of the most attractive, productive and recognizable forces in fashion and culture, known both for his extraordinary designs, his tireless creative work and his legendary personality,” said Max Hollein, Austrian director of the Metropolitan Museum.

party of the year

The exhibition will open on May 1 with the so-called “Met Ball”. Often referred to as the “Party of the Year,” the gala is an annual star-studded fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute. The biggest event the international fashion calendar has to offer, attracts countless VIPs to New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art each year.

Invitations are special and tickets start at $25,000. All for a good cause, of course – money will be donated for the maintenance of the museum’s Costume Institute. The stewardess is none other than the dreaded US “Vogue” editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. No wonder, therefore, that stars and star candidates want to show themselves at their best. As host of the gala, Anna Wintour chooses several co-hosts each year to match the theme of the night.

By the way, the first Met Gala took place in 1946.

Cher, Lady Di, and Kate Moss are just a few of the high-profile guests of recent years. In our gallery, we show that many things can go wrong during this long period of time.
