Donating money to an organization, mowing the lawn for an elderly neighbor, or giving a gift to a friend will help you be happier and improve your mental health. Researchers and determined people agree on this.
Those who manage to free themselves from a rigidly self-centered worldview and devote most of their time to others will feel a rapid increase in their satisfaction. Helping is an expression of love and nothing more than an active philanthropy inherent in every human being.
A number of scientific studies have shown a direct link between altruistic behaviors and feelings of happiness. According to a study by California Loma Linda University, donors release many happy hormones and decrease stress hormones. First of all, dopamine, endorphins, serotonin and oxytocin are secreted. First, while we are responsible for feeling anticipation, serotonin occurs when we receive recognition and appreciation.
A research team led by US professor Sonja Lyubomirsky (55) has also taken a closer look at the link between helping and being happy. Researchers tasked students to do several favors once a week for six weeks. The type of kindness was left to those tested: donating blood, visiting grandparents in a nursing home, or donating money. Their happiness was compared to that of a control group who didn’t have to do anything generous. The helper group showed a significant increase in satisfaction scores.
Lyubomirsky explains that only ten percent of our happiness can be traced back to our living conditions. This means that the joy of a new home or new job evaporates quickly. On the other hand, 40 percent of our happiness is triggered by our own behaviors and our daily routines that we control. The remaining 50 percent is genetic.
So, if you want to be your own fortune teller, you can certainly do so. For example, a surefire way to be happier is to do charity work. But it is enough to start small by helping. You don’t have to be part of a large volunteer organization from the start. It is quite sufficient to deal with your fellow men more often and more regularly. It is often small gestures that bring great joy in others and increase the satisfaction of the giver.
We live in a time when human-induced temperature fluctuations threaten our planet’s natural climate system. Helping should no longer just mean doing something good for one’s environment and fellow citizens, it should also involve a fundamental rethinking of how we can contribute to our environment. American psychologist and author Wayne Dyer’s (1940-2015) book “The Shift” concludes with three internal changes that show us how to shift from egocentrism to a service attitude.
