Streaming tip: A must-see recent sci-fi milestone

When it was announced that there would be a sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi masterpiece Blade Runner, most genre fans must have been shocked. After all, sequels are usually not only less good than the originals, but often they’re actually pretty bad. And especially when it comes to true classics – and “Blade Runner” is undoubtedly one of them – you often wonder whether that should be the case. Hand on heart: Blade Runner 2049by director Dennis Villeneuve (“Dune”) is the best proof that it’s good to give sequels a chance!

Incidentally, “Blade Runner” is not an invention of Ridley Scott or screenwriters David Webb Peoples and Hampton Fancher, but is based on the science fiction novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by the American author Philip K. Dick. The work is also a real classic and a real cult book, which is still wonderful to read and has never really lost its topicality.

If you haven’t seen Blade Runner 2049 yet, you definitely should – especially if you care about sci-fi movies. With a WOW subscription you stream the film at no extra cost. You can also find Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner” on the platform:

This is what Blade Runner 2049 is all about

It is the year 2023 when the manufacture of replicants is finally banned. The reason: There were several serious incidents in the production of the artificial humans being bred in the space colonies. Production will not resume until 2036 when industrialist Niander Wallaca (Jared Leto) develops the Nexus 9, an improved replicant.

Older, now banned models should now be eliminated. That is the job of the leafhoppers. The LAPD task force, which also includes K (Ryan Gosling), must track down and eliminate the outdated models. But on his quest, K stumbles upon a secret that not only has tremendous explosive power, but also leads him to a former blade runner: Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who suddenly disappeared 30 years ago…

“Blade Runner 2049”: Top or Flop?

Critics and fans agree: “Blade Runner 2049” is a masterpiece. The editors of FILMSTARTS also love the dystopian work. How much do you read in the 5-star review, which is enthusiastically enthusiastic. And we’re not alone in that, as a look at review sites like or revealed.

But Villeneuve didn’t make it to the box office ring with his 2017 film – quite the contrary. From an economic point of view, Blade Runner 2049 was a flop. The film only managed to gross $259 million internationally on a blockbuster budget. But few people wanted to see the iconic original in the cinema at the time. The work is still a cult today.

What’s next for Blade Runner?

In an interview with Villeneuve revealed that long after ‘Blade Runner 2049’ was shot, he still dreamed about the film’s dark atmosphere and found it difficult to tear himself away from this dystopian world. “If you ask me if I want to visit the ‘Blade Runner’ universe in a whole new way, I can answer ‘yes,'” he revealed, but explained that he wouldn’t be making another sequel. Villeneuve is thinking more of a whole new detective noir story. Who knows, maybe we’ll see another Blade Runner project from the lead director one day.

A “Blade Runner” series is currently being worked on. The style of this should be based on Villeneuve’s film. If you want to know more about it, we recommend the following article:
