1. La Graciosa

Recognized as the eighth inhabited island in the Canary Islands since 2018, La Graciosa is just 29 square kilometers in size. There are no asphalt roads here, there are beautiful beaches. Caleta de Sebo, the small main town, offers modern accommodation and a campground. However, it’s worth booking early as space on the small island is limited.

Fly: A boat trip to the (still) smaller neighboring islands of Islotes is particularly beautiful.

2. El Hierro

The Little Canary Island of El Hierro is best known among hikers. The biosphere reserve is geared towards sustainable tourism and seeks self-sufficiency from 100 percent renewable energies. The varied landscapes on Little Canary Island are particularly beautiful. They range from the green mountains to the “El Sabinar” juniper forest, to the seaside caves of lava and natural pools.

Fly: Whether you’re an experienced diver or a novice – El Hierro has several dive schools with a wide variety of options for exploring the magical underwater scenery.

3. La Gomera

La Gomera is the second smallest of the seven Canary Islands. The beautiful nature of the rugged volcanic landscape in La Gomera attracts many hikers. The island’s unique charm is due to its different climatic zones: from the rugged coast to the laurel forests of Garajonay National Park and the highlands.

Fly: Skywalk at Mirador de Abrante near the village of Agulo offers excitement and one of the best views on the island. There is a depth of several hundred meters under the glass floor. On a clear day you can see Teide volcano rising from the sea in Tenerife.

4. Palm

Northwest of La Gomera is the island of La Palma. It is also affectionately referred to as the beautiful island Isla Bonita. A network of hiking trails has traversed the island for centuries. These roads, which once served as connecting roads for residents, are today extended and marked with signs for visitors who love to walk. It leads through picturesque, untamed nature with lava fields to the eight kilometer wide crater of Caldera de Taburiente National Park. The area around Teneguía volcano in the south is also fascinating and looks like it’s on Mars.

5. Explains

The small, scenic island of Ons is located in northwestern Spain. It is part of the Illas Atlánticas de Galicia National Park. Peace and quiet are guaranteed here, as only a handful of people live permanently on the islet. There are no cars and nature sets the daily rhythm. The ounce is only four square kilometers in size and is therefore an ideal place to rest for anyone who wants to get away from civilization and relax.

6. Arosa Island

Isla de Arosa (also: Illa de Arousa) is located in the picturesque region of Galicia. About 5000 people live on the island, who make their living mainly from tourism and fishing. The island with the Parque Natural de Carreirón nature park and wild beaches is nowadays a popular place for excursions.

Fly: On weekdays, the 36-kilometer coastline is idyllic and serene. However, it can be crowded on summer weekends.

7. Tabarca

The island of Tabarca is the only inhabited island in the Valencia region in southeast Spain. The water here is particularly clear, as it is located in a marine reserve. The small island can be reached within an hour by boat from Alicante on the mainland. There is a small hamlet once inhabited by prisoners and rich marine life.

Fly: The neighboring islands of La Cantera, La Nao and La Galera are also worth a visit.

8. Minorca

Alongside its older sisters Mallorca and Ibiza, the Balearic island of Minorca is quite impressive. The capital, Mahón, with its beautiful port, attracts many sailors, among others. Long beaches that are not yet overcrowded are particularly beautiful. Rocky bays (Calas) with their turquoise blue waters are also ideal for relaxation.

Fly: After examining the beautiful structures of the small capital, you can take a stroll through the fragrant pine forests.

9. Cabrera

Cabrera island, also called Goat Island, is part of the archipelago of the same name south of Mallorca. It covers an area of ​​just 15 square kilometers, making it the largest of the 18 islands. Therefore, Cabrera is also the only permanently inhabited island in the group. About 20 people live in the natural harbor of Es Port. Interesting: The ancient Romans lived in this place more than 2000 years ago. They also brought the goats, which gave the island of Cabrera its nickname. However, it has since moved to the mainland as its appetite threatens the sparse vegetation.

Fly: Cabrera is a protected haven for diving and snorkeling – and only 13 kilometers from Mallorca.

10. Formentera

The smallest of the Balearic Islands contrasts with the party island of Ibiza, just a few kilometers away. Even if Formentera now has big hotels, you won’t find mass tourism here like in Mallorca or Ibiza. With a length of 19 kilometers, the island is wonderfully manageable. The absolute highlight here are the beaches—some even glow pink. A beach club here and there, almost as cool as in Ibiza. But everything is a few gears quieter.

Fly: Formentera was once a dropout candidate for hippies and other alternatives. You can experience a twist at the so-called hippie market in El Pilar de la Mola.

11. Isla de San Nicolas (Lekeitio)

The small Isla de San Nicolas (also: Isla de Garraitz) is located in the Basque Country, in front of the Atlantic town of Lekeitio. Its name derives from a saint to whom the old monastery on the island was dedicated. The island is best reached on foot at low tide. From the beach in Lekeitio, a pier leads to the island in the open sea. Be mindful of the tides, especially on the way back, as they can be slippery. When we arrive on the island, there is a beautiful view on the opposite side of the Lekeitio harbor.
