Every kitchen needs a thorough cleaning from time to time. However, daily washing and cleaning of food residues from work surfaces and floors should always be done immediately. This reduces the growth of germs, so the kitchen is always clean and ready for the next use.

Cooking and preparing food quickly creates grease stains on stovetops and in the microwave. Burnt crusts often form in the oven. A heavily used refrigerator, bin, and sink also need to be cleaned regularly to stay hygienic.

However, mistakes are often made during cleaning, which causes germs to build up and spread. These can even be harmful to health. If you avoid the following mistakes, your kitchen will not only sparkle, but will also be really clean.

Error 1: Wrong technique when deleting

It is important to know how to clean properly, not only for the kitchen, but in general. It is wrong to disperse dirt and germs from A to B by wiping aimlessly back and forth with just a cloth and cleaning agent. It is better to proceed with a freshly rinsed cloth under warm water and a freshly sprayed cleaning agent, structured in wavy lines. This ensures that the surfaces are really clean at the end.

Error 2: Do not give the detergent time to act.

Most cleaning agents are sprayed on as soon as they are wiped again. However, this is not very effective. Give the substance some time to take full effect and have an antibacterial effect. Five to ten minutes is recommended.

Error 3: Often forgotten surfaces

It’s not just sinks, counters and floors that need to be cleaned. And don’t forget all the surfaces you touch with your hands: faucets, cabinet handles, drawers and door handles. There are many germs that can easily be transmitted to other people.

Error 4: Never clean litter boxes

In garbage bins, especially in organic wastes, molds that spread easily in the air form. Spores should never be inhaled because they can cause headaches and concentration problems and even asthma after prolonged exposure. For this reason, bins should be cleaned once a week – the lid, especially the underside, also needs to be cleaned thoroughly.

Error 5: Rinse the coffee maker with hot water only.

Anyone who owns a coffee machine should clean it once a month: not just the outside but especially the inside should be kept clean. To keep the coffee machine hygienically clean, in addition to rinsing it with hot water, you can regularly soak the removable parts in soapy water. Rinsing with a little vinegar essence also kills germs and dissolves scale, after which clean water should be run through the machine a few more times.

Error 6: Cleaning the dishes incorrectly

Utensils that are frequently exposed to moisture offer a breeding ground for germs: the sponge, the cleaning cloth over the sink, the towels, and the mop. You can avoid this if you take care to replace or clean it regularly. Sponges should be discarded after only a week, as the moisture in them quickly colonizes pathogenic bacteria. Cloths and tea towels should be washed in the washing machine at least 60 degrees with a pinch of vinegar.

Error 7: Use disinfectant too often

Aggressive disinfectants should only be used with caution because too frequent disinfection attacks the skin flora and makes the skin more susceptible to allergies. Normal cleaning agents and scrubs are perfectly adequate for the kitchen in a small house if cleaning is done regularly.
