After the Last Attempt Failed: Sci-Fi Highlight of the 1990s Now Becomes a Series!

With “Galaxy Quest”, Dean Parisot succeeded in creating a new sci-fi cult in the late 1990s, which was characterized by one very special thing: although the film was intended to be a parody of “Star Trek”, it also functions as an self-contained space adventure, characterized by a high degree of creativity and pace. In addition, there was a wonderfully playful ensemble consisting of Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman, among others.

Then, in 2015, it was announced that Paramount TV Studios had commissioned a “Galaxy Quest” series to be released on Amazon Prime Video. The plan was to make the series a direct sequel to the 1999 film. The original cast around Tim Allen and Co. should also return. However, development was dealt a serious blow by the death of Alan Rickman. The “Galaxy Quest” series was last mentioned in 2018, when Peter Scheer revealed himself as the new screenwriter. But then it got quiet…

“Galaxy Quest” is now becoming a series!

As has now been announced, Paramount Television Studios is making another attempt to develop a “Galaxy Quest” series. The project is in a very early stage of development. Mark Johnson, the producer of the film, will serve as an executive producer on the series. In addition, the format will then, unsurprisingly, be available as a subscription to the Paramount+ streaming service.

Representatives from Paramount+ and Paramount TV Studios have not yet issued a statement. It is not yet clear whether there are plans to bring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Sam Rockwell, Tony Shalhoub and Co. to retrieve again. Either way, if the original cast is brought back on board, it’s going to be quite a difficult task to get the film’s chemistry back without Alan Rickman.

That’s what “Galaxy Quest” is all about

In case you haven’t heard of the movie, here’s the synopsis: it centers around the cast of a formerly popular sci-fi series called Galaxy Quest. At a fan convention, the crew is then brought onto their ship by aliens. They think the actors are real space heroes! These should help the aliens fight against the evil Sarris.

And while the “Galaxy Quest” stars still think the kidnapping is part of their act, they soon find themselves in the middle of a battle on an alien planet and must prove how much heroism they really are.
