In March, it was announced that Daisy Edgar-Jones (“Crayfish”) would play the female lead in Twisters. It would be a new blockbuster chapter, following Jan de Bont’s successful 1996 disaster film. It is not yet clear whether it will be a reboot or a sequel. In the end, you may have to use the currently popular term “requel” again. These are films that reuse elements of the original film in a new context, but still see themselves as a sequel.
This also raises the possibility that Twister’s protagonist, Helen Hunt, will return for Twisters. However, nothing has been confirmed on this so far. Instead, another star is currently in negotiation talks: Glen Powell. Among other things, he has taken on a bigger role in the blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick” and was also seen in the war action movie “Devotion” alongside “Creed III” villain Jonathan Majors. Powell will also star in Richard Linklater’s (Boyhood) action comedy Hitman.
This is “Twist”
The assumption that “Twisters” could take the said requel approach is also due to Frank Marshall. The successful producer is the driving force behind “Twisters” – and was also responsible for expanding the “Jurassic Park” series with the sequels of the “Jurassic World” movies.
The screenplay for “Twisters” was written by Mark L. Smith (“The Revenant”). Lee Isaac Chung, who directed the acclaimed drama Minari, will direct. Chung also directed the third episode of the current third season of The Mandalorian (the Dr. Pershing Coruscant episode). Originally it was even thought that “Top Gun: Maverick” creator Joseph Kosinski should be responsible for directing “Twisters”, but he was eventually surpassed by Lee Isaac Chung.
In the United States, “Twisters” is scheduled to hit theaters on July 19, 2024, making for a popcorn spectacle like a summer blockbuster. There is no German date yet, but it should be in close proximity to the US date.
