As early as 325 AD, at the Council of Nicaea, the Church determined that Easter would be celebrated on the Sunday after the first full moon in spring. And the beginning of spring is always March 21, although the astronomical beginning of spring can also coincide with March 19, 20 or 21.
This means that there are the following extreme variants for possible Easter dates: If there is a full moon on March 21 and Saturday at the same time, Easter Sunday will be celebrated on the earliest possible date, March 22 – this is the last time in 1818, on the other hand, with the full moon If it occurs between 12 a.m. and midnight on March 20, that is, before the artificially planned spring start, the first full moon of spring will not rise between midnight and 12 a.m. on April 19. If April 19 is also Sunday, Easter would theoretically even be postponed to April 26. That’s how it would be in 1981. But with this extreme variant, Easter is still celebrated on April 19 according to the regulations. This results in a timeframe for Easter from March 22 to April 25. By the way: Pentecost and Ash Wednesday are tied to the date of Easter – it happens seven weeks later and 40 days before – and is postponed accordingly.
2019 we have The Easter paradox occurred. The astronomical and thus real full moon actually illuminated the night of March 21, 2019 at 2:43 PM. It was the spring full moon and Easter was to be celebrated on March 24. However, the Church calculates the date of the full moon according to a special cycle for centuries, according to which the full moon was already in the sky on March 20 this year. This account is wrong. Still: almost, or according to the characteristics of the church, the full moon was already on March 20, that is, before the onset of spring. It was still considered a winter full moon, and as a result, March 24 was not yet Easter. Instead, on April 19, the first full moon of spring rose into the sky, and on April 21 we ate Easter eggs.
This whole complex issue is called the Easter Paradox. The next instance of its kind won’t happen again until 2038. Ancient church formulas make Easter come too late every 19 years, adding to confusion and pulling the hair of journalists trying to explain.
