As soon as the sun rises, people retreat back to nature. Crowds tend to gather in places known for big outings. Swiss travel guide Marc Gottwald is fed up with it. He studied environmental science at ETH and as the director of Myswisspanorama offers guided trips to Switzerland’s most beautiful interiors.
“Crystal-clear lakes, huge glaciers, stunning scenery, golden red forests or charming mountain villages – what Switzerland has to offer in such a small area is simply incredible,” travel expert Blick tells Blick.
Despite Switzerland’s diversity, finding such insider tips on the internet takes a lot of time and patience, which is why most people keep going to the same crowded places. Gottwald privately reveals his top six insider tips for a successful Easter trip.
“This walk is one of my favorite walks: even Queen Victoria and Winston Churchill from England knew about the beauty of this area,” Gottwald says. Behind you during the walk is the stunning view of the impressive Fronalpstock and, again and again, Lake Lucerne.
The large stones you can see are particularly striking, according to Gottwald: “These are so-called boulders that have been transported for miles by glaciers. You can even find these polished stones in the region of Zurich, which was covered in ice 20,000 years ago.”
Route: Höhenweg Morschach – Sisikon
Duration: about 2 hours and 15 minutes
Difficulty level: simply
One caveat: steep descent
The Goldseeli arose as a result of a tragic story: In 1806, one of the largest rockfalls in Switzerland occurred at Goldau, creating this remarkable lake. Hiking in the wild woods reveals imposing rocks. Trees lie here and provide dead wood to nature as an important habitat and feeding ground for animals and plants.
“For me, this model is a concept and – very close to Zurich – something you rarely see outside of Sihlwald,” says Gottwald. In the spring, around May, wild orchids bloomed here. With a lot of luck, you might even spot a kingfisher if you stay calm. Barbecue areas are also available. “It is important to enjoy the peace and quiet, as it is a nature preserve with many rare animals and plants,” the travel expert advises.
Route: Goldau bus station, Buosingen Camping – Goldseeli
Duration: about 45 minutes
Difficulty level: very easy
One caveat: Parking is actually just for the campground, but can be requested.
“This hike is a must for nature and culture lovers,” Gottwald assures. Because Ernen is not only one of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland, but also offers magnificent panoramic views of the Valais Alps.
“Since Ernen was formerly the Gom’s religious and political headquarters, the gallows can still be found here,” says Gottwald. Some of the highlights of this hike are the cherry trees in bloom and the tightly guarded orchids that can be seen from May towards Mühlebach. But to choose them is strictly prohibited.
At the end of the route you will be rewarded: «When you arrive in Mühlebach, you can discover the oldest wooden village in Switzerland. Some of the houses are over 500 years old.”
Route: Ernen – Mühlebach – Ernen
time length: about 2 hours
difficulty leveld: easy
One caveat: you can also switch to the mail bus on the way back, but it works sporadically
“I probably didn’t take as many breaks as I did on this one-hour hike,” the guide admits. On this route, you suddenly felt like you were in another world. «On sunny days this is the perfect place to enjoy the view of Lake Thun and Niesen, and the many flowers in the spring. You can even see Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. It’s a great powerhouse in the Bernese region with many traditions,” Gottwald says enthusiastically.
Route: Sigriswil-Gunten
Duration: around 1 hour
Difficulty level: simply
One caveat: steep road
Lake Aegeri is a popular place for excursions and is often frequented at Easter. That’s why Gottwald suggests: “Why not enjoy the panoramic view over Lake Aegeri almost by yourself?”
Hiking is one of her favorite hikes when she just wants to take a short route, see the Alps and meet almost no people. «Beautiful high-altitude hiking offers time to yourself and guarantees peace and quiet. Except for a few farm machinery and birds, you’ll hardly see anyone,” Gottwald promises.
Route: Morgarten – Brestenberg – Ramsli – Oberägeri
Duration: about 3 hours
Difficulty level: simply
don’t notice: partly slippery in spring
“For me, Toggenburg is a natural pearl with many properties,” Gottwald says. A particularly beautiful place is Stein. Because a little further away you can discover romantic farmhouses, cows and even llamas: “As dairy farming has not been profitable for a long time, farmers and tourist areas in general are looking for creative solutions and new income opportunities,” explains the travel guide.
Emerging walks with llamas, also offered in Toggenburg, are particularly popular in Switzerland. This leisurely walk from Stein to Badhus is essential for children and adults alike. If you prefer to stay longer on the road, you can also hike from Stein to Arvenbüel on Lake Walen in about three and a half hours.
Route: Stein – Badhus – Stein
Duration: about 1 hour and 15 minutes
Difficulty level: very easy
don’t notice: If you decide to take a longer walk in the direction of Arvenbüel, you should wear snowshoes as there is still snow on this route at the moment.
