We spend about a third of our lives in bed. We lose up to half a liter of moisture and up to a gram of dead skin every night. House dust mites, hundreds of thousands of which live in mattresses and duvets, feed on it. Also, the smallest particles It creates dust by mixing with textile fibers such as pollen and bacteria on the mattress. Dirt is not usually visible to the naked eye. Well probably one of the reasons many people don’t clean the mattress. According to a recent study of more than 30,000 respondents from 33 countries by vacuum cleaner manufacturer Dyson, one in two people never vacuums their bed.
It makes sense to vacuum the mattress once or twice a month, says Martina Blättler, 48, Head of Housekeeping, Swiss Hotel and Housekeeping Association. “Best when you change the sheets.” It is important to use the vacuum cleaner attachment with a soft brush in order not to damage the surface. Blättler recommends a cotton fleece to protect the mattress from stains. This protector is placed on the mattress and tightened at the corners. It absorbs blood and other liquids and can be washed at 60 to 90 degrees.
It depends on how you set up the bedroom, says René Ulmann (64), mattress cleaning expert and owner of Bioclean company. Professional cleaning is recommended every one to two years in rooms with carpets and curtains, as these fabrics attract a lot of dust. “He’s getting into bed too.” During a professional cleaning, the dirt accumulated in the mattress is loosened by vibration with a special device, vacuumed and then the surface is disinfected.
They pose no health risk to most people, but cause an allergic reaction in about six percent of children and adults. Triggers are certain proteins in the feces of house dust mites. If they get on the mucous membranes of sensitive people, they can trigger symptoms such as nasal congestion or itchy eyes.
You can’t get rid of microscopic spiders. “They’re part of the home environment, like the bacteria on our skin,” says Thomas Hauser, 60, an allergy and immunology specialist at the Zurich Center for Immunology. According to Hauser, the most effective measure against the spread of mites is to use a certified anti-mite cover. It wraps the mattress completely and is closed with a mite-proof zipper. This prevents mites from settling on the bed. Other daily numbers are:
