Campaign: The Challenge of Basic Sanitation in Latin America

Poor sanitation and polluted water are linked to the transmission of diseases such as cholera, dysentery, hepatitis A and typhoid.

According to Unicef data, 1 out of 3 people in Latin America does not have access to appropriate and safe sanitary conditions, and every year 297,000 children under the age of 5
years die from diarrhea associated with a lack of water, sanitation and hygiene.

Meanwhile, the organization Waterdata 89 million people do not have access to a bathroom in the region.

Actions

Considering this scenario, the campaign was launched “Where is the restroom?”, which aims to sensitize people about the lack of access to a decent bathroom in Latin America and in line with its purpose of providing “Better Care for a Better World”. The person in charge of this initiative is Kimberly-Clark.

The company is dedicated to improving access to basic hygiene and sanitation for the most vulnerable communities in the region through its “Baños Cambian Vidas” program.

In the campaign video, different people visit an apartment for sale that is fully equipped, with the exception of a bathroom.

The visitor’s reaction to discovering this situation is captured by camera, and as they realize the lack of a bathroom, it creates a reflection on the harsh reality faced by the millions of Latin Americans who do not have access to a decent bathroom and how this is essential to improving people’s quality of life.

“Where is the restroom?” This is another program initiative “Bathrooms change lives”that has impacted the region’s population through local activations that bring toilets, hygiene education and access to drinking water to the most vulnerable communities, said Melvin Cruz, head of Kimberly-Clark in Panama and the Dominican Republic. .

Number of people affected”Bathrooms change lives” in the region it is 3.5 million as of 2017.

“In this year 2023, we will continue to work towards achieving the goal of using 10 million people by 2030,” Cruz specified.
