• If the departure is delayed by more than five hours, the customer has the right to cancel the flight and request a refund.
• If a flight is cancelled, the airline must either refund the ticket price to the affected passengers or offer an alternative flight. It also has to compensate passengers for the waiting time. Here, too, the amount of compensation depends on the distance traveled and the delay (see points above).
• If the airline has overbooked a flight, it must first seek out volunteers willing to voluntarily give up their seats. The airline must offer them a refund of the ticket price and alternative transportation to the destination. Passengers who have been penalized because the airline could not find volunteers will also receive compensation payments according to the above issues.
• If airlines announce flight cancellations 14 days before departure, passengers cannot claim compensation.
