Anyone applying for an advertised position or applying to an employer on their own initiative should first prepare a well-structured resume and a motivated cover letter. But it often fails because of this, as staff counselor and social psychologist Lucas Zehnder (40) puts it. He offers business insights in an interview with Blick: “The less effort HR spends on gathering information about themselves, the more time it spends looking at other parts of the application,” says Zehnder. .
According to the expert, the content of the application is even more important than a clean and organized design: “If we are really interested in a job, we do a lot of research. We want to find out exactly what is important to the company. Only when our information is as complete as possible will we write our cover letter and edit our resume.»
In addition to the lack of preparation, other mistakes are often made. For example, in job interviews, as Zehnder explains, the conversation is often not taken seriously enough. “If we don’t inform ourselves about the company, industry and job profile, and don’t know what we can contribute with our own experience, we probably won’t get a good number,” the HR consultant warns. . This then leads to uncertainty, because one has to constantly improvise.
Exaggerated and unwelcome honesty can also lead to rejection, as Zehnder explains: “We need to be aware that companies will present their best, and we can do the same. Or who said they’re going to snore loudly at night on a first date?” However, it should not be applied too thickly in a job application or interview. You must stand behind your strength and remain humble.
“Despite an internal appointment for a long time, it happens again and again that positions are only declared pro forma. In some cases, jobs are just posted for testing even though they’re not actually hired,” says Zehnder. Even if you look “too dangerous” and see it in the executive chair, this sometimes results in job applications being rejected.
“Unfortunately, there are also demographic and cultural reasons for rejection that still play a lot of part and can’t be talked about nicely: age, gender, origin, and sexual orientation,” says the staff advisor, and fortunately adds more and more companies focus on diversity. Every social development needs some time.
But, according to Zehnder, the true reasons for rejection often remain hidden. A query to HR departments or staff offices only rarely provides information.
If your dream job didn’t work out, the personnel advisor recommends writing a thank you letter and signaling that you’ll be available for future discussions. “This way, we make the best impression possible and leave the door open for further opportunities.” Finally, Lucas Zehnder advises: “Job seekers should never be discouraged by rejection.”
