Especially during the pandemic and lockdown, many have probably felt how painful the absence of social contacts can be. And as research shows, prolonged loneliness is not only uncomfortable, it can also be unhealthy. “We also see depression, anxiety disorders, suicidal thoughts and sleep disturbances. Psychologist Christine Dworschak of the University of Zurich says loneliness also increases the risk of dementia.
