It’s probably the best news of the year for home theater enthusiasts: Jon Landau, long-time producer partner of successful director James Cameron, has now leaked at an event that some of the Cameron classics will receive their much-anticipated home theater upgrade over the course of the year. current year.
The two mega-blockbusters “Titanic” and “Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora” are only available on Blu-ray and 3D Blu-ray, but not in 4K – both have now celebrated their comeback in restored 4K versions on the Canvas. Movies such as the brutal Schwarzenegger classic “True Lies” and the revolutionary “The Abyss”, which we even consider one of the best sci-fi movies of all time, are only available on DVD so far! For the many fans of the gargantuan, widely respected blockbuster, this fact has been the cause of heated debates for years: how can it be that of all things Films are not even available in HD, while many smaller, lesser-known productions are already available in Ultra-HD? Forget it. Because the waiting seems to be coming to an end. Finally.
When asked how the freshly revised, physical evaluations of the films are doing, Jon Landau has now revealed: “Titanic”, “Avatar”, “True Lies” and “The Abyss” will finally celebrate their 4K premiere in 2023. At the same time, a new release on DVD and Blu-ray with the new master should follow.
Yes, it’s only a 40 second video, but it reveals what is probably the most exciting home theater announcement of the year for many – at least for the author of this article:
The fact that James Cameron’s films take a particularly long time to shine in new splendor is due in no small part to the director’s perfectionism. While “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” was a long time coming, partly because the technology had to be developed to implement Cameron’s vision, Cameron left nothing to chance when it came to revisiting his old films.
But that love and work pays off, as the Blu-ray evaluation of “Titanic” has shown, among others. The 1997 romantic epic was turned into 3D a few years ago – and ended up actually making many movies shot in 3D look really old.
Cameron Movies in 4K: When is it?
There are no further details about the release date yet. Landau only speaks of “2023”, which would currently equate to a time window of nine and a half months. Anyway, what we already know: “Avatar 2” celebrates its German home theater premiere on April 4, 2023 and will then be released digitally only (e.g. on Amazon Prime Video). DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray, as well as the launch on Disney+, will be a long time coming, at least for now. How long remains to be seen.
We also met up with Jon Landau a few months ago for an interview and also followed up on the Cameron classics. The producer was also unable to give us more detailed information at the time, but he did reveal: The Abyss will be the first of the highly anticipated Cameron classics to arrive in 4K. It is not known when the time will come and whether the schedule may have changed in the meantime.
One way or another: if it actually happens in 2023, we’re sure one or the other movie will hit the shelves in time for the Christmas business. Possibly even several of the films, which could then perhaps even be published in a Cameron collection. This is all speculation at the moment…
