Just a few days ago, DC Studios author Tom King revealed in an interview that James Gunn will not only write the screenplay for “Superman: Legacy” but also direct the superhero movie. But then the conversation published via YouTube was published by again removed or set to “private”. The rumor mill started to boil – and we classified the information.
Today we know: In the heat of the moment, King not only got carried away with some awkward phrasing, but probably just babbled it off. Now came the first-hand official confirmation: James Gunn directs Superman: Legacy! The filmmaker announced this via Twitter and Instagram:
“Yes, I’m directing ‘Superman: Legacy,’ which comes out July 11, 2025,” Gunn opens his rather emotional post. Not only did his brother Matt point out to him that the film will be released on his father’s birthday. In addition, the filmmaker also looks back on his personal story in the post, which connects him to the project.
“It’s been a long road to get here,” said the director, who was offered Kal-El’s story many years ago. But Gunn declined because at the time he felt he couldn’t do justice to what is arguably the most famous superhero of all time. It lacked the unique idea needed to do it. Today it looks different:
Superman’s origins increasingly became the focus of Gunn’s interest, his lineage – both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his earthly farming family, the Kents. The question of who Superman really is, what defines him and his decisions led Gunn to write a screenplay. Just because I write something doesn’t mean it is […]that’s enough to invest more than two years in directing,” says Gunn. “Certainly not on this scale.”
But he’s excited about the script and now looks forward to tackling the project. And we are happy too! Where: To be honest, anything other than Gunn in the director’s chair would have not only disappointed us, but surprised us quite a bit. Whether it’s “Super – Shup Up, Crime!”, the “Guardians Of The Galaxy” movies, “The Suicide Squad” or “Peacemaker” – Gunn has always made his own screenplays with his superhero adventures. And why would you change such a well-functioning recipe for success?!
By the way, there will be news from James Gunn on May 3, 2023, when “Guardian of the Galaxy 3‘ is coming to cinemas.
“Chapter One: Gods and Monsters”
By the way, “Superman: Legacy” would open the new cross-platform DC universe under the title “Chapter One: Gods And Monsters”. The first details of what DC boss Gunn and his partner Peter Safran are up to here are already available:
By the way, in “Superman: Legacy” we no longer see Henry Cavill, but a new actor in the role of Krypton’s most famous citizen. Who that will be is not yet known. We will see the young version of the legendary hero as he tries to reconcile his Kryptonian origins with his earthly everyday life.
