That’s the difference between Bordeaux and Burgundy

The Bordeaux viticulture region in western France has a maritime climate influenced by the Atlantic. In the warmer months, low sea temperatures cool the surrounding air, while in winter the Atlantic Ocean ensures that temperatures on land don’t get too freezing. As in Burgundy, precipitation in Bordeaux can often spread throughout the year, but in general it rains much more in Bordeaux. On the other hand, winters in Burgundy are significantly colder and spring frosts are more frequent.

The main grape varieties in Burgundy are relatively easy to remember: Chardonnay for white wines and Pinot noir for red wines. It’s quite different in Bordeaux, where grape varieties Merlot, Cabernet sauvignon, Cabernet franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec set the tone for red wines. Burgundy wines are made from a single variety, while the vast majority of Bordeaux wines consist of at least two grape varieties. Meanwhile, the Sauvignon blanc and Sémillon grape varieties play a leading role in white wines.

In good years, more than 7,000 wineries in Bordeaux produce over 800 million bottles of wine. That’s about half the wineries, and about four times that of all Burgundy wine region bottles in generous years. Especially in recent years, spring frosts and hail damage in Burgundy have meant that quantities produced have been significantly less. This increased price pressure on many Burgundy wines.

In terms of selling prices and market value of wines, Burgundy has more diversity than Bordeaux. The cheapest of all Bordeaux wines are available in the usual supermarkets for well under ten francs per bottle, while the most expensive wines exceed 1000 francs when they are first released. In Burgundy, the rarest wines are also in the four-digit range, while in the secondary market five or even six figures are wasted for some wines.
