The Star Wars franchise is thriving on Disney+. Andor was celebrated, the animated series The Bad Batch impressed many longtime fans and now The Mandalorian is back with compelling new stories. But what about the big screen? We’re not the only ones who have long assumed that Lucasfilm and Disney will use the “Star Wars Convention” in April 2023 to announce their plans. And the latest rumors hinted at the direction this could go.
Because the journalist Jeff Sneider, who specializes in insider information, reports in the new edition of his show that background work on a “Star Wars” project by “Watchmen” and “Lost” creator Damon Lindelof is well underway.
Damon Lindelof’s “Star Wars” Movie: That’s Known, That’s Suspicious!
Lindelof is said to have pitched his project to Lucasfilm for the first time in 2021 – and already with a permanent star on board. Bee this protagonist would be Yahya Abdul Mateen II action. The fact that the villain “Aquaman” and the protagonist “Ambulance” were really going to lead the movie is just a guess and conclusion based on a few hints about the personality.
What turned out, however, was that Lucasfilm put together a so-called Writer’s Room with Lindelof. There the idea was developed further. Then Will Lindelof and Justin Brit Gibson (“The Strain”) wrote the final screenplay. According to Sneider, this was probably completed recently. There was also input from “Star Wars” expert Dave Filoni, who currently stars in the series on Disney Plus.
According to reports from Hollywood industry magazines, the director is also in the fall of 2022 Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy on-board. The Pakistani filmmaker and journalist actually comes from the documentary field and has already won two Oscars for her works “Saving Face” and “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness”. She recently switched to fiction and directed two episodes for the MCU series “Ms. Marvel” and is therefore well known at Disney.
Lucasfilm producer Kathleen Kennedy also revealed that the next “Star Wars” movie will be based on the events of “Star Wars: The Dawn of Skywalker” is located. According to Sneider, he also has this information about Lindelof’s film. It’s also possible that characters from the sequel trilogy will return. Interestingly, “Rey” Daisy Ridley recently publicly revealed that she had meetings at Lucasfilm. So the new project could possibly be a kind of “Star Wars 10”.
Big announcement of “Star Wars 10” in April?
It is believed that Disney is now taking on a second new leading role and the first supporting roles in the background to then present the entire project at the Star Wars Celebration in April with a big announcement. This is where the actual title (which probably isn’t “Star Wars 10” or “Star Wars: Episode X”), logo, and cast and crew could be revealed – as well as, of course, the theatrical release.
That will be at the end of 2025. Disney has long announced a December 17, 2025 release date for Star Wars, so far there has only been speculation about which film will fill this date. It’s now most likely Lindelof’s and not a project from Thor: Love And Thunder director Taika Waititi, who was also in the running.
New 5-year plan for “Star Wars” in the cinema?
Kathleen Kennedy is said to have a five-year plan for movies. If this is correct, the aforementioned Writer’s Room also makes sense. Because then it is easy to imagine that several projects have been developed at the same time, which are connected in one way or another. Incidentally, there is already another “Star Wars” film in Disney’s starting calendar for December 15, 2027.
It remains to be seen whether Lucasfilm will also announce further plans than a film at the April fair. However, we’re pretty sure a theatrical project will be unveiled next month – and right now there’s a lot of evidence that it belongs to Damon Lindelof.
