Clitocybula ellipsospora is the name for the small fungus whose cap is two to five centimeters in diameter, the Swiss Systematics Society (SSS) announced on Wednesday. Whether the mushroom is edible or not has not yet been tested.

So far, scientists have found the fungus in only three places in the Spanish provinces of Burgos, Madrid and Segovia. With this fungus, it took a lot of time.”

It grows in mountain pine forests on acidic soils near peat bogs. Due to the dry summers in Spain, these habitats are not common and are endangered by human use.

“The discovery of Clitocybula ellipsospora demonstrates how important peatlands and their environments are to biodiversity,” said Alice Cibois of the SSS.
