Marvel boss Kevin Feige recently announced that he would take action against the increasingly criticized “Marvel oversaturation” – and create less content in the future to give the individual heroes and their stories the spotlight time they deserve. At the same time, a Feige project fell victim to the new Disney plans for the future – namely his “Star Wars” movie.
And not only that: In addition to the Feige-produced “Star Wars” adventure, Patty Jenkins’ “Rogue Squadron“pulverized, like the usually well-informed magazine reported. There is no official confirmation from Disney yet.
While everyone is talking about the galaxy far, far away thanks to The Mandalorian’s third season, work on two promising Star Wars movies that fans have been longing for has come to a halt – which is only partially surprising, comes…
“Rogue Squadron” has been in limbo for a long time
It’s been more than two years since Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy announced that Patty Jenkins had passed the baton to the next Star Wars film, Rogue Squadron. This gave DC an absolute surprise hit in 2017 with “Wonder Woman” and at the time was about to launch the highly anticipated sequel “Wonder Woman 1984”. But Last year there were already the first indications that “Rogue Squadron” might not be set in stone after all:
Jenkins confirmed last December that he was working on the project, but said he didn’t know “whether it will happen or not.” In September, Disney removed the title from the calendar for the current cinema year, as “Rogue Squadron” was originally set to hit theaters in December. Sources familiar with the production have since revealed that the film is no longer being worked on. It remains to be seen if the adventure of the legendary battle pilot squadron will eventually make its way to the big screen.
Kevin Feige: Marvel instead of “Star Wars”
In May 2022, Feige’s “Star Wars” movie was still in extremely good shape. At the time, screenwriter Michael Waldron (“Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness”, “Loki”) revealed that he was working on a script for the movie and was excited about the freedom he was given. In October, Waldron was assigned to write the Marvel mega-project Avengers: Secret Wars.
Now it seems that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a priority for Feige and Waldron – which would also be totally understandable. After all, while the MCU is a long-established, ever-growing franchise that already has a big, solid plan (although it’s being fleshed out a bit now), Feige’s “Star Wars” movie about act as an independent story, not a sequel or anything like that. And you might tell them at a later date…
But don’t worry, “Star Wars” fans won’t run dry in the near future and can of course still look forward to plenty of fresh supplies. Last summer, FILMSTARTS video editor and “Star Wars” aficionado Sebastian watched the countless new series, some of which have already been released, but some of which have yet to celebrate their debut:
