Already at the end of 2022, Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin confirmed that, contrary to some reports, their “Escape From New York” (“The Rattlesnake”) is not a remake. After all, the original is “one of those brands that you can’t remake. The movie is untouchable for us, so to speak.” Even then, the two teased that the “Scream 5” movie “wasn’t dissimilar.”
In an interview with they have now confirmed: “Yes, Requel is the idea.” They refer to a term that came about as a mixture of “remake” and “sequel”. A requel is also used to refer to films that are a continuation of an existing film series, but also reuse elements of the original film in a new context or a newly interpreted plot.
What about Kurt Russell returning as Snake Plissken?
Even though some older movies like “The Exorcist III” are now called requels by some cinephiles, the term has only been used in recent years with titles like “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “Terminator: Genisys”, “Jurassic World” or more recently ‘Scream 5’ has become more popular.
Part of a requel usually involves one or more characters returning from the original – and also the respective actors, if possible and useful. Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell and David Arquette reunite on Scream 5. A Rattlesnake requel would almost certainly need Snake Plissken back in the mix, and who should play him if not Kurt Russell?
