US pledges $6 billion to protect world’s oceans

class=”sc-97fd9fa8-0 jNFKxv”>

Former US Secretary of State and current White House climate chief John Kerry said on Thursday (local time) that the amount should be split among 77 offshore projects. This should include technical assistance for the creation of green transport corridors aimed at reducing emissions from maritime transport.

On Thursday, the European Union had already committed CHF 816.5 million for marine protection. Of this, 320 million Euros will go to research projects aimed at protecting marine biodiversity. The EU is providing another 250m euros for the launch of the Sentinel-1C satellite, which will monitor ice melt and the resulting climate impacts.

Leading politicians met at the “Our Ocean” summit on Thursday to discuss various threats to the world’s oceans. The two-day conference will discuss expanding marine protected areas, reducing stressors on the oceans, and ensuring a sustainable ‘blue economy’, the ocean equivalent of a green economy.
