Not only since the fully sprawling action spectacle in “Fast & Furious 9”, in which director Justin Lin and Co. fulfilling one of the biggest (supposed) dreams of the “Fast” fanbase (keyword: space), that this riot franchise is long past its peak. Such a critic is also the author of this article, who, as a “The Fast And The Furious” fan from the very beginning, still admires the original – but could hardly do anything with the chapters of recent years. And others too.
On Facebook We’ve had so many reactions to the release of the first trailer for “Fast & Furious 10” aka “Fast X”, like “It’s really amazing how there can be more than one part of it”, “way too many unrealistic scenes” or “yawn”. “It couldn’t get any worse or more pathetic,” the comments also say about Part 9. Why after nine or ten movies (including “Hobbs & Shaw“) so did you continue? Who wants to see that anyway?
Well, very simple: a lot! The interest in the world travel adventures of Dominic Toretto and Co. is still huge. Despite much opposition from former “Fast” fans, the action films continue to generate incredible interest from the public. The via published figures for the first “Fast X” trailer:
The Fast & Furious 10 trailer was viewed 295 million times in its first 72 hours. It sounds like a lot, and it is. To put this in perspective, “Fast & Furious 9” was viewed 262 million times during the same period – even setting a record for the Universal Studio with 151 million views in the first 24 hours! However, since the most recent chapter, coming soon, clearly wins the three-day comparison, we assume that the first day preview of “Fast X” was viewed more often than its predecessor.
However, the series “Fast” does not play in the absolute top class of Hollywood. With 355.5 million views in the first 24 hours, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” leads the rankings by far, but “Avengers: Endgame” (289 million views) and one or two other blockbusters should also gain significantly more interest. woke up.
The creative advertising campaign pays off
Of course, it helped that the Super Bowl trailer came out – and you’ve reached a lot of sports fans in the US and around the world in one fell swoop. This finally proved itself in part 9 and should have contributed greatly to the new film’s trailer success.
In addition, Universal Pictures has been preparing for the launch since early February with so-called legacy trailers: Before we got to see the first moving images of “Fast 10”, we took a look back at the previous events with new trailers from the previous films. This tactic should also have paid off, because the “retro clips” were definitely click hits on the Internet.
The task now is to get people to the cinema
But now it depends on whether the trailer is also good enough to attract cinemas en masse. In any case, that is exactly what is needed to recoup the terrible production costs, which according to the latest information would amount to almost 340 million dollars. The film is one of the most expensive film productions in cinema history. Taking into account the also very high advertising costs, the film will probably have to make at least 800-900 million dollars to end up in the black at all.
In any case, the tenth ‘near’ adventure must be more successful than its immediate predecessor, which grossed ‘only’ $ 726.2 million worldwide – which was partly due to the somewhat less well-attended cinemas in the Corona era, but certainly also to the quality of the film. Because “Fast 9” was received much worse by both the trade press and the public than the films before it. But there is hope. In any case, the past has shown that Vin Diesel’s speed saga has what it takes to play at the top: After all, “Fast 7” ($1.5 billion) and “Fast 8” ($1.2 billion) belong to the most successful films of all time!
“Fast & Furious 10” will be released in German cinemas on May 18, 2023. At the latest then we can get an idea whether one of the greatest film series of the recent past is going uphill again towards the finale (part 11 should close the series). Not only are we thrilled about prominent newcomers like Jason Momoa, Brie Larson and Alan Ritchson, but also about the performance of Paul Walker’s Brian O’Conner, about which director Louis Leterrier has now revealed the first details:
