Hyundai and Kia adapt software because of dangerous TikTok trend
It has now been six months since a TikTok trend ignited showing how car thieves stole Hyundai and Kia cars using just a USB cable. The Korean manufacturers are only now intervening with a software update.
How exactly the theft works, we will not explain again here. It’s so easy that anyone can do it. Korean cars in particular proved to be susceptible to the trend. But cars of other brands that were equipped with a start button were also stolen in this way.
Update for Kia and Hyundai cars from TikTok trend
Although the TikTok trend is now over, Hyundai and Kia are now intervening with an update. The software of 3.8 million Hyundai cars and 4.5 million Kia cars will be adapted. The immobilizer can therefore no longer be circumvented with a USB cable.
While the TikTok trend may be over, the update remains necessary. Criminals can easily steal cars. The wave of burglaries started in 2021. In 2022, almost twice as many Hyundai and Kia cars were stolen than comparable cars from other brands.
In the USA, cars will be equipped with the new software. It is still unclear whether the update will also apply to Dutch cars. Autovisie contacted both Hyundai and Kia. Both brands have yet to answer the questions. An update follows.
