20 years of “Get Rich or Die Tryin'”: 50 cents for his career and new music

50 Cent is now 47 years old, known worldwide for his hits and has earned enough money with his art to rest on his laurels. Instead, he prefers to spend his time tinkering with new projects.

So probably there will be a new album soon. For the 20th anniversary of “Get Rich or Die Tryin'”, he reflected on his career in an interview with “Rolling Stone Magazine”.

In the interview, 50 Cent was asked that “Many Men” and “21 Questions” almost didn’t make the record. He explains it had to do with the tempo of the songs:

He explains what hip-hop was like in New York City at the turn of the millennium – most of it was mostly about money:

Back then, before you ended up on anyone’s radar, you had to be known within 10 blocks. After being kicked out of his old label Columbia Records due to a shooting just before the release of his first album, he struggled to establish himself as a recording artist. But Fifty knew how to help himself, as he says:

In the past, many rappers in the city only became known through the mixtape of a hip-hop DJ and you had to have good connections to make a name at all – these days it’s different, says the artist.

50 Cent has big plans for this year: Eminem asked him to join Dr. Dre to come into the studio to record something. He explains that before meeting other artists, he thinks about how an album should feel.

He does not indicate when exactly an album should be released. Above all, he attaches great importance to an album being coherent in itself – properties that sell well play only a minor role.

He also has something up his sleeve with his film and television production company «G-Unit Film & Television».

For new projects he no longer works with the American pay television channel Starz. He says he’s been slowed down by too many creative leadership changes – and says if he owned the station things would be a lot better.

50 Cent is currently not only working on new music, but other movies and shows as well. For example, a series is planned this year based on Eminem’s cult film “8 Mile”.
