button Atlas is the online encyclopedia of cuisine and its cultural history – a kind of world atlas of traditional dishes from all over the world. More than 10,000 meals and dishes are cataloged and described there
And each of these dishes receives a rating from each user – which also means, among other things, that rankings can be made. Not only from the best and most popular menus in the world, but also from the worst.
Here are the latest statistics from February 2023:

And – oh ho! – what do we discover in the top 20?
Riz Casimir, invented in 1952 by Mövenpick founder Ueli Prager, has been a staple on restaurant menus across the country for decades. This is how people imagined the exoticism of the Far East in the 1950s: a kind of Zurich slices of meat with a mild curry cream sauce. And to make the whole thing look really, really “Asian”, a few exotic fruits were added: banana (fried), pineapple (canned) and a cocktail cherry on top of the cake.
A Swiss classic. But one that the international community doesn’t seem to appreciate…which is objectively not entirely incomprehensible. The combination of veal with banana and co. is something, well, special.
And even if you don’t hate Riz Casimir’s food, be honest – when was the last time you ate Riz Casimir? These days, when Thai curry is ubiquitous, this Mövenpick creation is quickly disappearing from the country’s menus.
But let’s see what company this Swiss retro dish is in! Here are the “20 Worst Dishes in the World,” according to TasteAtlas:
From Grenada: A stew with curry breadfruit (breadfruit).
German Christmas cookies with anise flavor, similar to the Swiss Änischräbeli.
Exactly this thing from the 1950s that first appeared on the menus of the Mövenpick restaurants.
From the Philippines: A noodle dish with scraped pork or beef head meat in a hearty broth made from cow or pig brains.
A classic of Italian-American cuisine from the Utica-Rome region of New York State. A pasta dish usually consisting of chicken, rigatoni and pepperoni and a tomato cream sauce.
Beef or lamb stew from North West England and Wales, but typically from Liverpool.
One of the more eccentric outgrowths of America’s rampant bacon obsession in the 1900s.
From Honduras: Stew with coconut milk and sea snails.
Sour and spicy fish curry soup from Thailand.
From Poland: a soup with duck blood as the main ingredient. Dried plums, pears, cherries and the like are often added.
From the country where you bake everything, absolutely everything (fried Mars Bar, anyone?), it’s no surprise that a frozen pizza, breaded and fried, is sold as legitimate street food.
Veal head, usually boned and skin, eyes and nose removed. Often served in jelly as a terrine, in which the muscle meat of the cheeks (calf cheeks) but also the tongue and brain are used.
From Northern Ireland: A lean beef sausage with spices and vegetables (usually leeks and onions) that is sliced and fried.
Danish yellow pea soup with pork or sausages.
Also from Denmark: Salted herring, which is breaded and fried.
Fried spider is a delicacy offered in different regions of Cambodia prepared from the tarantula species Haplopelma albostriatum (White-striped tarantula). It is not entirely clear when or why this preparation of spiders for food began. However, it is believed that during the reign of the Khmer Rouge, hunger and lack of food led the population to turn to this food.
Anise sweets originally made by the Benedictine monks of Flavigny Abbey. Each candy begins with a single anise seed, which is coated in flavored sugar syrup sequentially over a period of 15 days.
Icelandic specialty made from fermented Greenlandic shark meat. The smell and taste of the dish are very intense; Consistency of the pulp very rubbery.
Canadian layered pizza baked in a pot or pie pan.
And the dish that gets the worst rating from users around the world and is therefore considered the worst dish in the world is…
