Tonight on TV: one of the worst horror films of recent years – despite a very cool premise!

It happens again and again that TV stations broadcast TV premieres of even good movies in the middle of the night because they don’t believe in a good rating anyway and need to get rid of the “content” somehow. The public broadcasters also sometimes follow this tactic, although they should actually focus less on viewing figures and more on quality and cultural diversity.

But at some point the pain threshold is just reached – and then we won’t even complain if a broadcaster decides to deposit it in the nightly death zone. Also the The Hollywood horror film “Polaroid” (at least 140,000 viewers visited local cinemas in 2019) was such a case and only premiered on RTL II at 1:20 am (!)

Tonight it’s not so bad – because tonight “Polaroid” will run more than an hour earlier, namely from 12.10 p.m. and again on RTL II.

If you don’t feel like staying up that late but still want to take a look, Amazon Prime Video has it too:

That’s what “Polaroid” is all about

The Norwegian Lars Klevberg, who has here extended his own short film into a feature film, throws “Polaroid” elements from movies like “ring“,”The curse” and “Final destination” together: Shy student Bird Fitcher (Kathryn Prescott) is particularly interested in her hobby of photography. One day in an antique shop she comes across an instant camera. However, she has no clue what the dusty camera is all about:

Already after the first photos, Bird realizes that all her photographed die a gruesome death a little later. However, the previously unsuspecting Bird has already taken a group photo of her classmates – and their brutal fate seems sealed as well…

Therefore, unfortunately, “Polaroid” is rather nonsense

Lars Klevberg stretches the already pretty cool, but also pretty thin premise of his short film with all kinds of boring clichés and sucked genre standards – and then doesn’t even implement the scary scenes expertly. “Polaroid” just doesn’t have a unique selling point – and the stolen elements are also poorly implemented, not to mention the poor acting.

It is no wonder that the originally planned theatrical release of “Polaroid” in the US was immediately canceled, which is why there are hardly any reviews of the movie on RottenTomatoes – but they are all negative (0% positive reviews). In the official FILMSTARTS review, we also gave the film only 1 out of 5 stars.

Our conclusion: “A weak story, lousy actors and often amateurish performance ensure that ‘Polaroid’ doesn’t give you chills for a second.”
