It is located in the Italian viticulture region Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany and represents strong red wines made from the Sangiovese grape variety. About 250 producers cultivate 2,100 hectares of vineyards and export 70 to 80 percent of their wines, including to Switzerland.
The oldest and best-known winery in the region is Biondi-Santi, which was the only winery in the Brunello di Montalcino region from 1865 until the Second World War. Blick reader Peter Brönnimann’s bottle comes from Biondi-Santi and the excellent 1990 vintage.
A bottle of Brunello di Montalcino 1990 is very valuable
Despite the good vintage, the wine’s ratings from leading wine critics were quite low. At a tasting in 1996, American Robert Parker Jr. (75) found that the wine lacked fruitiness and concentration, so he gave it only 85 points. English-language “Wine Spectator” also gave it just 87 points. But what was interesting was the drinking window Parker gave: until 2036.
Perfectly preserved bottles of Biondi-Santi from the 1990 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Greppo currently cost around 200 francs per bottle in specialty stores. However, due to the damaged label, the bottle from Blick reader Peter Brönnimann is likely to be slightly undervalued. However, given the long drinking window, you might dare to open the bottle yourself.
