While most of the awards season awards are presented by film critics or the filmmakers themselves (most notably the Oscars), there are also some awards where the public has a choice. First and foremost is here the People’s Choice Awards, the largest and most famous American public award. It has been awarded annually since 1975 and, after a poll company had long determined the winners in a large-scale referendum, it is now done via online voting supported by some additional survey tools. As a result, the movies and stars that are especially popular with mainstream audiences boast here.
That one of the hugely successful Marvel blockbusters wins the award is therefore not necessarily a surprise, after all it was already in 2021 (“Black Widow”), 2019 (“Avengers: Endgame”) and 2018 (“Avengers: Infinity War”) the case – so damn regular in the recent past. But this year it’s a…
“Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness” is the best movie of 2022 for the audience
Because everyone probably expected the blockbuster highflyer “Top Gun 2: Maverick” to clear up. But the flying spectacle with Tom Cruise had to settle for a consolation prize. The Marvel blockbuster”Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness“that in addition to “Top Gun 2” for many it also beat “Elvis”, “Nope”, “Thor: Love And Thunder” and “The Batman”, which was actually the best comic book adaptation of the year.
“Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness” is currently the second highest grossing film of the year in US theaters after “Top Gun 2”, so of course it is still an obvious choice – especially since the move to online voting a few years ago also meant a stronger influence of the voices of the younger audience. Marvel’s success also earned two more awards for leading actress Elizabeth Olsen. Not only was she named the 2022 Female Movie Star, she also beat out Tom Cruise (and others including Dwayne Johnson, Chris Pratt and Chris Hemsworth) in the Action Star 2022 pageant.
Consolation prize for “Top Gun 2”, “Nope” gets nothing
As mentioned, there was only one consolation prize for “Top Gun: Maverick”, that of the best action movie of 2022. Incidentally, the sequel “Doctor Strange” was also defeated there. Another surprise at first glance came in the drama category: “Don’t Worry Darling” won here, despite falling short of expectations at the box office and other nominated films in the category such as “Elvis” or the lack of its own horror series . Category also sorted here “Nope” and “Scream” were left behind. Perhaps the popularity of protagonist Harry Styles helped a bit.
Incidentally, “Nope” was completely empty-handed – although Jordan Peele’s spectacle was able to screen the most films in advance with a total of six nominations.
In general, one thing to keep in mind with the People’s Choice Awards is how much of a popularity contest it is. Even if the organizers have taken countermeasures in recent years and the categories are no longer, for example, “Favorite Comedy Movie Actor”, but “The Comedy Movie Star Of 2022”. “) are hot – in the end, Adam Sandler still wins if he has a movie in the pipeline – even if it’s not a typical comedy, but the (strong) Netflix drama “Hustle”.
