After the success of “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” aka “Ghostbusters: Legacy” it should continue soon. Sony wants to bring “Ghostbusters 2: Firehouse” to cinemas as early as Christmas 2023 – but now without Director Jason Reitman. Surprisingly, he leaves the director’s chair to his colleague Gil Kenan. He should start the project as soon as possible. Much of the predecessor’s cast around Paul Rudd (“Ant-Man”) and Carrie Coon (“Widows”) will be back.
Such a short-term change in the director’s job often leaves fans skeptical at first and quickly raises concerns. But the hope is that these are unjustified. While there’s no known reason why Reitman isn’t directing, there don’t seem to be any creative differences at this point. Then Reitman remains involved as producer and co-writer, and has announced that he will support his successor, Kenan.
Gil Kenan: One of the “Ghosbusters” team
The new director is also no stranger. Kenan co-wrote the screenplay for Legacy and now its sequel Firehouse with Reitman. So he was involved, not an outsider who brings completely different ideas. Kenan, who is also known for the “Poltergeist” remake, the family movie “A Boy Called Christmas” and the Oscar-nominated animated adventure “Monster House”, is likely to carry out the plan previously developed with Reitman. So for now, fans don’t have to worry about their beloved franchise suddenly taking a different direction.
